Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Exempt (Salaried - Not eligible for overtime) To supervise and coordinate the daily operation and activities of the staff of the histology, surgical pathology, cytology and transcription sections of the laboratory.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Work experience may NOT substitute for minimum education requirement. Associate's degree in Science related field and three (3) years of related experience.
CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILLS
Ensures that the technical staff performs all tasks and procedures such as microtomy, routine staining, and cover slipping according to standard criteria.
Follows proper procedures when handling blood and/or body fluids in order to minimize exposure to infection diseases.
Coordinates the planning of schedules and work assignments of the staff within the histology section to insure an even distribution of the workload and to maintain the skill levels of all staff members.
Ensures that all quality control procedures established are performed as required. Prepares quality assurance and management reports.
Ensures that regulatory compliance is met with regards to disposal of chemical and reagent waste products.
Coordinates the training of all employees within the section for new equipment and procedures.
Ensures that all record keeping procedures, both manual and computerized, are performed according to established protocol.
Ensures that daily, weekly, monthly, and as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment is completed. Performs troubleshooting procedures as needed and will determine when service is required for said instruments and equipment.
Ensures that special staining procedures are performed according to established procedure.
In-services current employees to new policies, procedures, and protocol.
Preferred Qualifications
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS / REGISTRATIONS
Histotechnician (HT(ASCP)) or Histotechnologist (HTL(ASCP)) required
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
Written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge and experience in healthcare
Knowledge of sterilization procedures and infection control
Ability to operate various office machines including printers, computers and various software packages
Ability to multi-task
Ability to problem-solve
Ability to train others
Interpersonal skills
Knowledge of supplies and equipment ordering and inventory control
Process improvement and quality skills
