The Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical community that provides acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama. The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000 in Alabama and treats approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 138 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Birmingham, AL is located in the heart of the Southeastern United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering, and higher education.

The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for the operational effectiveness of the organizational activities under their direct supervision. The incumbent demonstrates and provides leadership in delivering and improving holistic patient care through collaborative strategies with patients, family members, significant others and members of the interdisciplinary team. The incumbent is accountable for ensuring competency, organizing, directing and evaluating the patient care delivery system, coaching, mentoring and supervising all assigned subordinates, for contributing to the establishment and implementation of nursing standards of practice/care, and optimizing the scope of practice of each subordinate. As a nursing leader, the Nurse Supervisor uses appropriate consultation with experts of each discipline he/she supervises to ensure that practice and performance issues are addressed and resolved. The incumbent maintains a collaborative working relationship with all levels of administrative and interdisciplinary staff, promotes continuous improvement through the application of lean principles, evaluates organizational practices to improve the quality of patient care and monitors standards and quality of care. Knowledge of system redesign or Clinical Business Process Redesign, Patient Centered Care, and Patient Centered Medical Home.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Nurse I, level I-Associate Degree or diploma in nursing; no experience
Nurse I, level 2-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 1 year experience OR Associate Degree in Nursing and a Bachelors in a related field, no experience, OR BSN, no experience.
Nurse I, Level 3-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 2-3 years experience OR Associates Degree or Diploma in Nursing and Bachelors degree in a related field, approx. 1-2 years experience OR BSN, approx. 1-2 years experience OR MSN or related field with a BSN or Bachelor's degree in related field, no experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
Preferred
Experience:
Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or higher from an NLN or CCNE accreditedprogram
At least five (5) years successful medical-surgical nursing experience and three (3) years of successful Primary Care experience
At least three (3) years successful supervisory experience in a clinical setting.
Prior supervisory experience in a clinical area preferred
Current BCLS certification
Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
Demonstrated ability to assess and prioritize multiple medical and surgical diagnoses
Demonstrated excellent physical assessment skills
Demonstrated ability to be dependable, self-directed, and flexible, including flexibility in assignment and time scheduling
Demonstrated evidence of managing and/or leading groups of professional and non-professional nursing staff is required
Demonstrated evidence of sound decision making and application of critical thinking skills
Demonstrated experience in applying Lean Principles in a healthcare setting preferred
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 ( ). Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.
